Roadmap Bulk Upload
As outlined in the Roadmapping section, We use a Jira Roadmap Template to plan out project issues that will then be created in the respective Jira project.
Using the Import work items from CSV tool in Jira, we can bulk import all of the roadmap issues in one action, removing the need to manually create each issue. This page outlines the steps for this process.
The Loom video below walks through the steps for bulk uploading your roadmap into Jira, and the detailed steps are written below.
- Open your project roadmap in Google Sheets
- Verify all columns are filled in
- Go to File > Download > Comma-separated values (.csv).
- Save the file using the naming convention
CODENAME Jira Roadmap - Roadmap.csv
Using a configuration file means that you don’t have to manually map all of the fields from your CSV to Jira’s fields. You only need to make three small adjustments to the config file belw, and then the bulk import will match everything for you.
- Download the Jira Bulk Import Configuration Template
- Open the configuration file in a text editor (e.g., TextEdit, Notepad).
- Three elements in the config file need to be updated to represent your current project. Update these three items and re-save the .txt file:
a.
config.file.name→ your Roadmap CSV filename (e.g., “Mallard Jira Roadmap - Roadmap.csv”") b.project.key→ your Jira project key (e.g., “MAL”") c.project.name→ your Jira project name (e.g., “Mallard”") - Do not change anything else in the file. All mappings and IDs are preconfigured.
💡 Tip: Search for the word CODENAME in the text file. The three returns are the three elements outlined above that you need to edit.
- Navigate to your project’s board
- Along the top navigation, select All Work. If you don’t see All Work at first, click “More”" and it will be nested in that dropdown.
- At the top right, click the
••• (More actions)menu, then select Import work items from CSV - Upload your Roadmap CSV file
- Select “Use and existing configuration file, and upload your edited

Jira will use the configuration file to map the roadmap fields to the correct Jira fields, and create all of the issues for you.
- Once the import completes, open your project board to confirm all issues appear under the correct sprints and releases.
- The Slack feed for your project will also show all of the newly created issues
